The Cure for Chronic Pain and Fatigue That Nobody is Talking About with Dr. Perry Nickelston

Perry Nickelston, DC is a chiropractic physician, creator of the Body Aquarium and founder of Stop Chasing Pain, a movement dedicated to optimizing health and helping people heal from chronic pain. He is also an expert on the lymphatic system, one of the most overlooked body systems, which plays an important part in maintaining health and helping to protect us from disease and infection. Ever since Dr. Perry discovered that the persistent health problems he was experiencing were caused by lymphatic congestion, he has made it his mission to learn everything he can about the lymphatic system and he is excited to share his extensive knowledge with listeners.

During our conversation, Dr. Perry provides a detailed summary of the lymphatic system, explaining that it acts as a drainage system for the body by eliminating waste from the cells, and pointing out that we have over 700 lymph nodes in the body, (mostly clustered around the top of the spine, shoulders, abdomen, groin, and knees), whose function is to attack bacteria, viruses, fungi and cancer. However, he warns that the lymphatic system can become overloaded when it can’t get rid of waste fast enough and the resulting toxicity in our bodies can lead to chronic pain, illness, and inflammation. Dr. Perry shows us some simple ways to build a strong lymphatic system by releasing lymphatic congestion and stimulating lymphatic flow. He also discusses low back pain and talks about the link between emotional trauma and chronic physical pain.

In this episode, you’ll hear from Dr. Perry on,

  • (34:45) How the lymphatic system works. Dr. Perry explains the process through which nutrients and oxygen come into the cells through the blood circulatory system and waste is disposed of through the veins and through the lymphatic system, which purifies it through the lymph nodes. He then describes how the lymph fluid takes the detoxified waste back into the venous system and carries it up to the base of the neck and down to the heart before it is purged through the liver and the kidneys prior to its secretion from the body. 

  • (50:25) Lymphatic congestion. Dr Perry uses the case of a patient he has recently treated as an example of how congestion in the lymphatic nodes of the abdomen and the groin can cause restricted blood flow to the nerves of the back and result in lower back pain. He explains that the cause of chronic pain is not always obvious and reveals that even though he will treat his patients’ symptoms, he also looks for the true, and often seemingly unrelated, cause of their pain.

  • (59:58) The most important piece of real estate in your body. Dr. Perry believes that the space from  the sternum to below the navel is a hugely significant part of the body because, although we very rarely feel sore there, it can be the cause of chronic pain in other parts of the body. To clear the lymphatics, remove toxins and release tension in the muscles, nerves, and fascia, he recommends pressing and rubbing the place directly below the sternum before proceeding down the lymphatic trunk and concentrating on manipulating the area around the navel.

  • (1:26:52) Clearing the toxins. Dr. Perry emphasizes that even if you eat healthily, stay hydrated, and breathe correctly through the diaphragm, you will not be able to supply your body with the nutrients and oxygen it needs if you are unable to get rid of your metabolic waste. He reminds us to pay attention to the lymphatic system if we want to improve our overall fitness and wellbeing.

  • (1:36:48) How to perform a lymphatic assessment. Dr Perry advises listeners to check for puffiness and swelling above the collar bone, around the shoulder joints and armpits, and below the creases of the groin. To stimulate the lymph nodes and release pressure, he recommends vigorously slapping, tapping or dry brushing these areas on a daily basis. After clearing the system, he suggests performing some exercises to improve lymphatic flow, such as trampolining or simply bouncing up and down on the balls of the feet for twenty seconds.
